Gunmen suspected to be cultists shot to death a former councillor of Abeokuta North Local Government Area, Mutiu Akinbami, around Brewery in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

Akinbami, popularly called Egor, was reportedly shot in the head by the gunmen while on a motorcycle with his son.

A reliable source who spoke to Chronicle NG on condition of anonymity on Friday said, “This incident happened at about 6.30 pm in between the popular brewery bus stop and Olomoore Junction.

“It appears the assailants suspected to be cultists have been on the trail of their target from his house inside the Olomoore Federal Housing Estate.

“They came in a tinted Toyota Hilux, and as soon as they caught up with the man who was on a motorcycle with his son, they opened fire on him.”

The spokesperson for the Ogun state police command, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the killing in a statement to journalists on Saturday.

Odutola said, “The Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa received a report at about 18:40 hours that Mutiu Akinbami, a man from Olomore Housing Estate, had been shot near the brewery.

“According to the caller, the deceased was riding home on a motorcycle when he was shot from behind by one of the masked occupants of an unregistered white tinted glass Hilux.”

The Divisional Police Officer reportedly dispatched patrol teams to the scene and took the victim to Ijaiye General Hospital, where a doctor confirmed his death.

The PPRO added, “Preliminary investigations have indicated that the late Mutiu Akinbami was a well-known member of the Eiye confraternity, who once held the top position at the Federal College of Education Osiele in Abeokuta and had been listed as a wanted person.

“Arrests have been made, and further details will be provided as the investigation continues to unfold.”
