Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Uwais, has passed away at the age of 88.
His death occurred in the early hours of Friday, as confirmed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr Kayode Ajulo.
Justice Uwais held the office of Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 until his retirement in 2006.
After retiring from the judiciary, he was appointed as the chairman of the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The committee was made up of notable Nigerians, including Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and human rights advocate Dr Olisa Agbakoba, SAN.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been disclosed, but tributes from the legal, political, and civic communities are expected in the days ahead.
