The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has responded to recent allegations aired on national television regarding the administration of expatriate quotas in Nigeria’s oil sector.

The minister emphasised that he is taking these allegations seriously and has implemented proactive measures to address the concerns raised. Previously, the ministry announced a review of the approving authority for Expatriate Quota (EQ) and Citizenship applications, as stated in a circular dated February 12, 2025.

Under the new framework, all approvals are now handled by the minister and the permanent secretary, replacing the previous system where directors in the ministry were responsible.

The ministry’s review, according to the Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalena Ajani, in a statement, aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency in processing EQ and citizenship applications, while also addressing potential abuses and irregularities within the system.

On March 4, 2025, Tunji-Ojo, along with senior officials from the ministry and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, met with the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) in Lagos.

Discussions focused on creating a conducive business environment and protecting the interests of Nigerians. Following the meeting, a review committee was established, comprising members from the Ministry of Interior, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and NECA.

The committee is tasked with examining the current expatriate quota policy and recommending necessary improvements.

Meanwhile, Tunji-Ojo assured that the government is committed to ensuring that the administration of expatriate quotas is conducted fairly and transparently while prioritising the best interests of Nigerians.

Additionally, the minister reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders to address concerns and enhance policies for Nigeria’s growth and development.
