The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has found Godwin Emefiele’s protracted arrest without trial by the Federal Government to be a gross violation of his fundamental rights.
The court also imposed a N100 million fine on the Federal Government and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
It also prohibited the FG and its agents from arresting or detaining Emefiele without a court order.
The ruling was issued in a fundamental human rights claim filed by the former CBN governor following his protracted imprisonment by the Department of State Services.
He sought the court to order the respondents to pay him N1 billion in damages and to stop arresting and detaining him.
Chronicle NG reports that the ex-CBN boss was arrested on June 10, shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
Defendants in the complaint were the Federal Government, the Attorney General of the Federation, the EFCC, and its chairman.
