The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a search operation at the Dangote Group‘s head office in Lagos on Thursday.
The operation, according to reports, forms part of its investigation into foreign exchange transactions during the tenure of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
Dangote Group refuted claims of foreign exchange (FX) malpractices and money laundering totaling $3.4 billion in November 2023.
However, it was reported that EFCC operatives on Thursday requested records about forex allocations to the group from 2015 to the time Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu and then arrested by agents of the Department of State Services in June 2023.
The investigation, Chronicle NG learned, also included other top companies that got forex at the official rate from the CBN.
Until June 2023, Nigeria operated multiple exchange rates.
“It is an ongoing investigation. Nothing has been concluded yet,” disclosed a source at the Lagos office of the EFCC.
It was also confirmed by some staff at Dangote Group that EFCC agents were at the office earlier in the day.
They did, however, reveal that the conversation was friendly as they delivered the documents needed by the anti-corruption body.
