Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has lost his local government area, Oredo, to the All Progressives Congress, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s governorship election results.
According to the commission’s results announced on Sunday in Benin City, the state capital, the APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, received 30,780 votes in the LG, while Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party received 24,938. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party received 5389 votes.
In other news, some supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party staged a protest at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against the results of the Edo State election released so far.
INEC revealed the results of 16 of the state’s 18 local government areas on Sunday, with the All Progressives Congress winning 10 and the PDP winning six.
Protesters gathered in front of the INEC office in Benin City, screaming various solidarity songs as some held leaves.
They claimed that the results announced thus far had been tampered with, claiming that they differed from what they had received from polling stations.
