Bola Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and administration, has stated that he will not allow any circumstance to undermine the country’s democratically elected administration.

Tinubu stated this in a statement released on Wednesday addressing the events in the Republic of Niger.

According to information coming in from the Republic of Niger, there have been some terrible events involving the country’s highest political leadership.

It should be obvious to all participants in the Republic of Niger that the leadership of the ECOWAS Region, as well as all supporters of democracy throughout the world, will not allow any circumstance to undermine the country’s democratically elected administration.

The ECOWAS leadership will not tolerate any action that impedes the smooth operation of legal authority in Niger or anywhere else in West Africa.

I would like to state that we are constantly following the situation and developments in Niger and that we will do all possible to guarantee that democracy is securely planted, nurtured, properly rooted, and thrives in our area.

I am in close touch with other regional leaders, and we will defend our hard-won democracy in accordance with the globally accepted ideal of constitutionalism.

As Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, I state unequivocally that Nigeria stands firmly with Niger’s elected government and conveys the absolute resolve of our sub-region’s leaders that we will not waiver or flinch in our stand to defend and preserve constitutional order.
