The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) says troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have killed Aminu Kanawa, the second-in-command to Bello Turji, a “notorious terrorist leader”.

Edward Buba, director of defence media operation, said in a statement on Wednesday that the troops also inflicted severe injuries on Dosso, Turji’s younger brother; Danbokolo, one of his closest allies; and several other commanders.

“Sequel to the ongoing military onslaught on terrorists in the North West region between 20-21 January 2025, troops of operation Fansan Yamma have neutralised the second-in-command of notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji, namely Aminu Kanawa,” the statement reads.

“The troops also inflicted terminal injuries on some of Bello Turji’s close allies, namely: Dosso (Bello Turji’s younger brother) and Danbokolo (one of Turji’s closest allies).

“Additionally, troops neutralised several of Bello Turji’s key commanders, namely: Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna Kahon-Saniya-Yafi-Bahaushe, among others.”

Buba said troops also killed over 24 fleeing terrorists from Turji’s camp around Gebe and Isa LGA in Sokoto state, as well as Gidan Rijiya in Shinkafi LGA, Zamfara state.

“The troops also neutralised another notable terrorist during the onslaught on Bello Turji’s enclave around Fakai high ground,” he said.

    • Bello Turji forced to release 15 hostages as terrorists surrender

“A terrorist identified as Suleiman, a loyalist of the late notorious terrorist leader Halilu Sububu, was leading a reinforcement team to rescue Bello Turji’s camp, which was in disarray when he was eliminated during the firefight.

“The death of Bello Turji’s second-in-command, close allies, commanders, and combatants is a significant blow to the terrorist network in the North West as well as their military and fighting capabilities.

“The troops are not relenting until the terrorists are completely destroyed.

“Troops’ operations are aimed at creating an atmosphere of safety and security for all citizens.”

Troops had reportedly killed Turji’s son, other family members and high-ranking lieutenants, in a January 19 crackdown on his Zamfara enclave.

The troops also destroyed Turji’s armoury during the operation.

Among the enclaves targeted were Zangon Dan Gwandi, Zangon Tsaika, Zangon Kagara, and a school reportedly used by Turji to store foodstuffs and weapons.
