President Bola Tinubu will, on June 12, bestow national awards on selected legislators in observance of Democracy Day.
Akin Rotimi Jr, the House Spokesman, stated this in Abuja on Sunday.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the leadership and members of the House of Representatives will attend the National Assembly’s Special Joint Sitting on Thursday, June 12.
The president, who is slated to be the special guest of honour, will address the joint session of the legislature.
“The programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of national honours on select legislators by Mr President,” Rotimi said.
The House spokesman stated that the subject for this year’s event is “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development”.
Rotimi stated that the combined sitting is an important milestone in Nigeria’s democratic trajectory.
He stated that it emphasises the National Assembly’s critical role in protecting democratic values, encouraging accountability, and driving national progress throughout the previous 26 years of uninterrupted civil administration.
Rotimi urged Nigerians to celebrate Democracy Day as a time of reflection, renewed patriotism, and dedication to creating a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.
