Comoros has announced its first coronavirus case. President Azali Assoumani said the patient is a man who came in contact with a French-Comorian national with recent travel history to France.
“Today on 30 April, the government is declaring the first case of Covid-19 in the Union of the Comoros,” read a statement issued by President Assoumani posted on the presidency website.
The patient was admitted at the El-Maarouf Hospital on 23 April for a cough, sore throat, fever and difficulty in breathing.
His condition is improving and the authorities are tracing those who came into contact with him, President Assoumani said.
Comoros becomes the latest African country to report of the first Covid-19 infection.
Lesotho is the only remaining African country that has not reported any case.
There have been reports of people dying from “respiratory distress” but President Assoumani last week said “no case had been registered in the country’s three islands”.
