Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has explained that the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) installed at the Lekki toll gate was not removed on Tuesday before the Nigerian soldiers shot at protesters.

Speaking to Arise News from the Lagos State Governor’s House he explained that the company in charge of the toll gate, Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) removed the infrared camera that picks vehicle tags because it did not want it to be destroyed.

He said the vehicle scanners with laser are the cameras that motorists will see when they drive past the toll gate as CCTV cameras are installed on top of the tower.

“We still have the recording from the CCTV, they were not removed and we are investigating the situation at Lekki toll gate through the video from the CCTV.

“The cameras that were removed are not CCTV cameras but infrared cameras used to scan vehicles that are passing through the gate.

“The CCTV cameras are installed up on the tower and not on the toll gate as many people have said. The experts can come to the toll gate and have a look at the camera.

The governor noted that he did not give any instruction that the cameras be removed or billboard switched off.

“I did not give any instructions for the electricity or billboard to be switched off. I spoke the the MD of these companies and they said they put out the light because there was a curfew in the state.

Arise News anchor, Reuben Abati asked the governor if the video would be provided for public consumption.

“Yes, I am willing to make the video available to everyone to see that the CCTV cameras were not removed.
