Aisha Dahiru Ahmed, popularly referred to as Binani, has been declared winner of the Adamawa Governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Prof Hudu Yunus Ari, Adamawa’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, pronounced Binani the winner midway through the counting.
Binani, a senator and member of the All Progressives Congress is the first elected female governor in Nigeria’s history.
While the exercise was deferred till 11 a.m., results from 10 of the 20 local government regions had been declared.
The announcement by the INEC REC was one hour ahead of schedule.
Before the announcement, incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was leading.
Supporters of the incumbent governor at the collation centre objected to the announcement being made by the REC rather than the returning officer.
Chronicle NG reports that the gubernatorial elections in Adamawa on March 15, 2023, was deemed inconclusive by INEC hence the rerun polls conducted April 15.
