Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the recent mass killings in Benue State, describing the attacks that left over 200 people dead as “senseless” and a grim reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
In a statement released on Sunday, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the coordinated attacks on several rural communities in the state, which have left many families devastated.
“This assault on innocent Nigerians is not just a local tragedy; it is a national emergency that requires urgent, decisive action,” he said.
Atiku called on both the Federal Government and the Benue State Government to urgently launch a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incidents. He stressed the need to arrest and prosecute those responsible, and to bolster security across vulnerable communities to prevent further bloodshed.
He further emphasised the need for improved security architecture and community protection efforts.
“The former Vice President also emphasised the need for the deployment of well-equipped security personnel, improved intelligence gathering, and proactive community protection, especially in vulnerable rural areas.”
He also called for immediate humanitarian support to aid the survivors of the attacks.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families and communities. No words can capture the depth of pain experienced by those who have lost loved ones, homes, and peace of mind,” Atiku said.
He urged Nigerians to unite beyond religious and ethnic lines in demanding justice and peace.
“Let us stand together as a nation in condemning these atrocities. May God console the bereaved, heal our wounded land, and restore peace to our communities,” he added.
Atiku’s reaction follows mounting outrage and grief over the wave of violence in Benue, with many stakeholders demanding accountability and a renewed commitment to securing lives and property in the region.
