Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has sacked 46 staff of Gotel Communications as the world celebrated the contribution of workers on May Day.

Gotel Communications is a broadcast company (television and radio) that transmits from Yola, Adamawa state capital.

The affected staff were handed their respective sack letters on Friday, being Workers Day.

It was signed by the General Manager, Mohammed El-Yakub.

A copy of the sack letter handed to the staff reads, “The management has decided to discontinue your services with immediate effect.

“Consequently, please be informed that your entitlements including stipend lieu of the notice will be computed and posted into your account with immediate effect.”

Some expatriate workers had earlier accused Gotel of breaching the terms of their contracts and failing to pay them months of salaries and entitlements.

The expatriates threatened to sue the company for breaching their contract terms.

His decision to sack them comes barely 24 hours after he suggested how the Nigerian government could survive in this harsh economic times.

He wrote an Op-Ed titled, “How To Pull Nigeria From The Brink” which was published on Thursday.

Earlier today, Atiku expressed gratitude to workers particularly health workers for their contribution towards containing coronavirus.

“This year, Workers Day is in the middle of a health pandemic. Therefore, I believe it is appropriate to express my utmost gratitude to our health workers who have been leading the battle to contain the spread of the coronavirus in our country. We cannot thank you enough,” he tweeted.
