Soldiers and policemen have foiled an attempted jail break at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre on Thursday, the interior ministry has said.
The ministry said no inmates have escaped from the correctional facility, urging citizens to ignore such rumours.
“The situation at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre is under control,” the interior ministry said, adding that, “the armed squad of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Police Force and men of the Nigerian Army are providing security at the facility.
The interior ministry added that, “Federal Fire Service is dealing with the fire. Ignore rumors of inmate escaping.”
An eyewitness said, “I can see them from my house at the moment. Soldiers and policemen have arrived. I saw prisoners throwing stones and I saw fire.”
Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi who spoke on the purported jail break said, “Yes, there is fire outbreak there but we are investigating and our men are on the ground with fire fighters.
“Area Commander, Area A and Commnader MOPOL 2 Keffi road VI and men are there. No cause for alarm.”
