SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, delivered an update on the investigation into an alleged rape case in the Alakuko area of Lagos State on Tuesday.
The case involving a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by her landlord’s son has been delayed due to a lack of cooperation from those concerned.
“The house has been located in conjunction with @Lagosdsva,” Hundeyin stated via X on Tuesday.
He added, “The landlord is not at home. The suspect is not at home, nor is the survivor or her family. The survivor’s mother has been contacted by phone, but she is not willing to cooperate with the police.”
Hundeyin expressed frustration with the community’s response, saying, “Everyone on the street has declined to assist the police in any form. Radio silence!”
The rape case came to light when an anonymous X user, #Rhwaley, shared videos of the victim and reported the incident.
According to the post, the assault took place yesterday, and when the victim’s family approached the landlord, he allegedly ignored their fears, saying, “Nothing will happen.”
Initially, Hundeyin had difficulty verifying the claims. “I have been tagged a lot to this post. I have equally called the DPO Alakuko repeatedly to get an update. The only update I have been getting is, ‘No report of such has been made,’” he said earlier.
Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Lagos State Governor, commented to the initial tweet, urging the family to seek assistance.
“Helpless ke… Nobody is helpless on this matter in this state. Call #Lagosdsva sharply,” Gawat wrote, referring to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team.
Despite the challenges, the police PRO assured the public that the investigation is ongoing.
