Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, has suffered criticism from Nigerians over his birthday felicitation to popular social media influencer Tunde Ednut.
Obi, in a statement on his verified X page on Monday, noted down birthday wishes to Tunde Ednut, a move that has stirred the ire of Nigerians.
”Today, I join the world in celebrating the birthday of a remarkable Nigerian media influencer, Tunde Ednut,” Obi stated.
”Tunde has earned his place as one of Nigeria’s most admired and hard-working internet celebrities, captivating audiences with his creativity, humour, and consistency,” Obi added.
Describing the influencer as ”a force in the industry,” the former governor of Anambra stated he applauded his impact in the entertainment industry.
”His impact on digital entertainment and his ability to connect with people across borders are truly remarkable, making him a force in the industry.
”On this special day, I wish Tunde Ednut good health of mind and body, continued success, and many more productive years ahead as he continues to contribute to the development of our nation. Happy birthday, Tunde Ednut,” Obi’s statement concluded.
The Labour Party chieftain’s birthday wishes to the social media influencer have attracted condemnation from Nigerians, with many slamming him for ”stooping too low.”
Reacting to Obi’s statement, Meshach Abimiku mentioned that the politician’s ”priorities are misplaced,” advising that he should focus on pressing issues in the country.
”Peter Obi’s priorities are misplaced—wishing a social media blogger a happy birthday amidst Nigeria’s pressing issues. It’s clear he’s campaigning for support, but as a presidential candidate, he should focus on addressing the nation’s problems, not currying favour with influencers.
”A presidential candidate celebrating a blogger’s birthday is a clear attempt to buy influence. @PeterObi should elevate his campaign beyond cheap popularity stunts,” Abimiku wrote.
Some described the elder statesman as a ”clout chaser” who they allege is seeking to gain favours among social media influencers.
”See what this one has reduced himself to. Mr. clout chaser,” David Offor stated.
”Ekwute has finally lost it. Look at who he’s issuing an official statement to,” Jayjam stated in his reaction.
