As protests talk intensify, NNPC announces ‘we are hiring’

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on Friday announced that it is recruiting as talks of a nationwide protest intensifies.

Nigerians, mainly youths, have lamented the hardship in the country since President Bola Tinubu was sworn in on May 20, 2023.

With protests set for August 1, the state-owned oil company NNPCL announced it was hiring.

In a statement on its social media account, it said, “We are hiring. Are you passionate about building an exciting career at NNPC Limited? Please visit careers.nnpcgroup.com to apply.”

Previous recruitment by the NNPC in the past has been marked by fraud and dishonesty. The state-oil firm had been accused of favouring children of the rich even when they do not apply.

Comments under the NNPCL post reiterate this.

Reacting to the recruitment post, Paul Bem wrote, “Just so people don’t say it wasn’t public,” as if to say the NNPC had concluded its recruitment behind the scenes.

Samuel Jones echoed the sentiments, noting like many others that the website link was broken. “The site has been deliberately designed not to allow any click. You can’t even accept terms and conditions.”

Olacube HM humoured the NNPC. “The working one (website link) was sent to children and relatives of senators and honorables.”

Another X user described the announced recruitment by the NNPCL as a deliberate ploy to distract Nigerians from its “wrong doings,” as alleged by Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

“They’re trying to create a distraction from all the things Dangote revealed. Have you ever seen an NNPC job advertisement before?

“They’re throwing everything out there to show that he is working when they have already picked who they will employ,” the social media user alleged.

Adeniyi described it as a “psychological scam,” saying, “I hope people know you put this out because you’ve been under mismanagement fire recently. There’s no job anywhere. Just do better and make profit for the country, and stop importing from Malta.”

Other Nigerians alleged that the Tinubu-led federal government intends to use the recruitment exercise to “distract” Nigerians from coming out to protest during the August 1st nationwide protest.

“Master of strategies is using every format to disengage the protest,” Anthony Obi alleges.

For Lukman Isah, he said, “Some may say that a threat of protest is ineffective, but the fact is, it has already made an impact. Even if they’re not actively recruiting, they’ve been rattled, and this is just the beginning of a series of repercussions.”

Ezeugo Okwu shared the same sentiments when he said, “I have never seen the NNPC post any info on recruitment on open platforms like this. The threat of a nationwide protest is making them behave properly.”

In the same vein, an X user simply identified as Kings said, “They are now bringing out the juicy jobs they believe are entitled to them and their families because Nigerians say they cannot longer accept the rubbish. I wish we did this earlier.”
