A middle-aged man named Nwana allegedly set fire to his wife, Chioma Nwana, after a heated argument about suspected adultery in Eziezekwe village, Abagana, in Anambra State’s Njikoka Local Government Area.
The terrible incident, which took place on Tuesday evening, deteriorated when the suspect accused his wife of having an affair.
Chioma, who suffered severe burns, was transferred to a local hospital but died from her injuries on Wednesday morning.
According to sources in the Anambra community, Nwana confronted his wife when she returned home from an alleged outing with another man.
The fight became out of control, prompting him to douse her with petrol and set her on fire.
A resident of the area, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, narrated, “The woman returned home on Tuesday evening, and her husband accused her of infidelity. During the confrontation, he poured petrol on her and set her ablaze. She was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately passed away this morning.”
According to the source, the couple had six children and had been living together in the village before the tragedy.
Following the incident, the suspect reportedly presented himself at the Abagana Divisional Police Station and confessed to the crime.
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Command, confirmed the event and stated that the suspect is currently in jail.
Ikenga stated, “The suspect is in police custody. Unfortunately, the victim died this morning. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has ordered the transfer of the case to the Homicide Unit for a thorough investigation.”
