Liverpool had chances to equalise but found Dean Henderson in inspired form and the Palace keeper superbly denied Luis Diaz in a one-on-one situation.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was introduced at the start of the second half and, having been previously booed by some supporters following the news of his departure from his hometown club this summer, this time it was all cheers as he prepared to play his final 45 minutes for Liverpool.
Almost half of that time was played with 10 men though because Ryan Gravenberch – a key player in their title win – was sent off for taking down Daichi Kamada when he was the last man just beyond the halfway line.
But despite that, the hosts finished strongly and Salah ensured the campaign did not end in defeat when he struck from close range to prompt more celebrations from the Liverpool fans.
