The Lagos State Government stated that the increased traffic from articulated vehicles on the Lekki-Epe corridor has necessitated the implementation of a technology-based electronic call-up system.

Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, confirmed this on Sunday in a statement issued by Mrs Bolanle Ogunlola, Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation.

Osiyemi disclosed that the e-call-up system will be implemented starting Monday, June 16, to regulate truck movement in the impacted area.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, important investments in the Lekki-Epe axis in Lagos, include the Dangote Refinery, the Lekki Deep Sea Port, and vital oil and gas infrastructure.

Osiyemi observed that industrial growth has exacerbated congestion in the area because there is only one major escape route available.

He stated that immediate and proactive traffic management measures are essential to address the deteriorating situation on the route.

According to him, 360 to 400 trucks operate daily, but this figure could climb dramatically once the Dangote Refinery is fully operational.

Osiyemi stated that the refinery alone might ship 3,000 to 4,000 trucks each day, emphasising the importance of regulation.

He stated that the e-call-up technology will assist in governing truck movement through structured scheduling, hence minimising traffic congestion.

“Truck operators will be required to register online and upload their Authority to Load (ATL) documents for verification.

“Only validated and cleared trucks will access designated parks, awaiting an electronic call-up notification before proceeding to their loading points,” he said.

Osiyemi stated that the system is intended to eliminate unlawful parking, enhance traffic flow, and protect road infrastructure along the corridor.

The commissioner praised the effort as a brave step towards modernising logistics and transportation management in Lagos, particularly in rapidly developing areas such as Lekki-Epe.

Osiyemi appealed for voluntary compliance from all stakeholders to ensure the system’s success and minimise traffic congestion in the region.
