    Shoprite workers in South Africa will commence one-day strike on Friday, 22 December 2017

    Workers at South Africa’s Shoprite will go on a one-day strike on December 22 to protest a change in working hours, their union said on Wednesday.

    About 30,000 workers will down tools during the strike, Mike Tau an official of the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union said.

    Tau said a full-blown strike would follow if the company failed to change the working conditions.

    Shoprite South Africa is yet to comment on the proposed strike by workers despite the telling effect it will have on its during this Christmas shopping period.

    The Shoprite Group of Companies is Africa’s largest food retailer.

    It operates 2689 outlets in 15 countries across Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.

    The company’s headquarters are in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

    Shoprite Holdings Ltd is a public company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, with secondary listings on both the Namibian and Zambian Stock Exchanges.

    The company also opened its first Nigerian store in the Victoria Island area of Lagos.

    Deloitte’s Global Powers of Retailing 2014 ranks The Shoprite Group as the 94th largest retailer in the world.
