Rasmus Hojlund’s time at Manchester United may be coming to an end, with indications that he could be on the move this summer despite a solid pre-season performance in the club’s tour of the United States.
The Danish striker has featured in friendly matches, but Manchester United’s aggressive pursuit of Benjamin Sesko signals a clear intention to bring in a new lead forward.
The Red Devils have already secured Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, but are still actively pushing for another top-tier striker.
Hojlund’s inconsistency in front of goal has reportedly become a point of concern for the club, with suggestions that “a fresh start away from the Premier League looks likely.” RB Leipzig has emerged as a potential destination, especially with United seeking to acquire Sesko from the Bundesliga outfit.
Inter Milan, who had earlier shown interest in a loan deal, remain observant. Though their approach was initially rebuffed, Manchester United’s position might change later in the window. If Hojlund stays on the books into the final stages of the transfer period, “expect more clubs to circle.” A potential move could help Hojlund “rediscover his form and rebuild confidence.”
Meanwhile, internal dynamics at Manchester United suggest a difference in opinion over the striker to pursue. Sources reveal that manager Ruben Amorim “actually prefers Ollie Watkins over Sesko.” Amorim reportedly sees the Aston Villa star as a better tactical fit. However, price remains a stumbling block: “Manchester United are not willing to pay more than £50 million for Watkins, and Aston Villa are not prepared to lower their demands.” Without a push from Watkins himself, a move appears unlikely.
Despite expectations that a deal might be pursued, it appears the club made informal contact with Villa over the weekend. Behind the scenes, recruitment chief Christopher Vivell is championing Sesko’s signing. Vivell has emphasized the 21-year-old’s long-term value: “Age, upside, and resale value are all part of the pitch.”
While Amorim reportedly has tactical concerns, Vivell maintains that Sesko “can develop into the kind of forward who fits Amorim’s tactical ideas.” Watkins, on the other hand, has been statistically more impressive, with “consistent and impressive” output in the last two seasons. United also know “he was open to the move.”
Sesko himself is reportedly keen on joining Manchester United, but a final decision is expected this week. Should Newcastle United miss out on Sesko, they could pivot towards Watkins in a late swoop.
