Gonzalo Garcia’s powerful 54th-minute header proved decisive as Real Madrid defeated Juventus 1-0 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, securing a place in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 quarter-finals.

The victory sets up a last-eight clash between Xabi Alonso’s side and the winner of the second Round of 16 match between Borussia Dortmund and Monterrey of Mexico.

Madrid’s performance was largely dominant, especially in the second half, and was capped off by the return of star forward Kylian Mbappe, who made his first appearance of the tournament after illness. The Frenchman was introduced as a 68th-minute substitute, drawing cheers from the 62,149 spectators in attendance.

The match began with Igor Tudor’s Juventus side pressing aggressively. Their early momentum saw Randal Kolo Muani go close after Kenan Yildiz played him through, but the French striker’s attempted chip drifted over Thibaut Courtois’ bar. Yildiz later unleashed a dangerous shot that deflected off Aurelien Tchouameni, narrowly missing the target.

Despite Juve’s confident start, Madrid grew into the game. Jude Bellingham forced a sharp save from Michele Di Gregorio, followed by a long-range effort from Federico Valverde, and a dangerous low cross by Trent Alexander-Arnold that flashed across goal.

After the break, Real upped the tempo. Bellingham teed up Valverde, whose drive whistled wide, before testing Di Gregorio again with a shot from the edge of the area. The Juventus keeper also denied Dean Huijsen’s thunderous attempt before finally being beaten.

The breakthrough came when Alexander-Arnold sent in a measured cross from the right. Garcia rose to meet it and powered in a header — his third goal in four tournament appearances — sealing Madrid’s advantage.

Juventus sought a response. Francisco Conceicao forced Courtois into a low save, while Nicolas Gonzalez went close with a 25-yard strike. However, Real kept pushing to double their lead. Valverde attempted an acrobatic overhead kick, and Arda Guler saw a late effort blocked by Di Gregorio’s legs.

Madrid held on to their lead, progressing to the quarter-finals with confidence and the welcome boost of Mbappe’s return.
