In a move poised to ignite national debate, Colombia’s government is set to appoint former gay porn actor and LGBTQ+ rights activist Juan Carlos Florian as the country’s new Equality Minister, a senior government official confirmed to AFP on Friday.

Florian’s appointment marks a bold and unprecedented step in a deeply Catholic and socially conservative nation. Once a sex worker and adult film creator, Florian has transformed his public life into that of a staunch human rights defender, advocating for the marginalised and LGBTQ+ communities.

The new role will place him at the helm of Colombia’s Ministry of Equality, responsible for ensuring fair access to government social programmes for vulnerable and excluded groups, including minorities, women, Afro-Colombians, and Indigenous communities.

Florian is no stranger to public service. He has previously served as a junior minister and held positions in multiple international organisations, building a reputation as a pragmatic and passionate voice for equality.

His appointment comes amid increasing turbulence within President Gustavo Petro’s leftist administration, which has already seen over 50 ministerial changes in just three years.

    • Colombia’s ex-president Álvaro Uribe sentenced to 12 years house arrest

Florian’s rise to the cabinet will likely become a flashpoint in the country’s ongoing cultural and political discourse — celebrated by progressive sectors and challenged by conservative critics.

As Colombia navigates its evolving identity, the question now is whether the country is ready to embrace such a symbolically charged appointment in the name of inclusion and equality.
