The Lagos State Police Command warned on Thursday that it will not tolerate any type of gathering at the state’s Lekki tollgate on the anniversary of the #EndSARS protest.

This comes as certain civil society organizations plan for a peaceful march on October 20, 2020, to celebrate the third anniversary of the incident that occurred during the #EndSARS demonstration in Lekki, Lagos.

Speaking on the aforementioned development, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos State Command Police Public Relations Officer, stated that no gathering or convergence would be permitted anywhere near the toll gate.

Hundeyin, who announced his official X profile (previously Twitter), also stated that police would be fully on the ground to ensure the safety of all participants in the peaceful walk as long as they do not disrupt traffic.

He said, “Buses at or by the Oriental Hotel suggest stopping or waiting for buses and gathering passengers.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no gathering or convergence whatsoever would be allowed anywhere around the toll gate.

“However, men of @LagosPoliceNG would be fully on the ground to ensure security for all persons participating in the peaceful walk as long as they are not obstructing traffic.”

It will be remembered that the #EndSARS protests were a public outcry for an end to police brutality, extrajudicial killings, extortion, and abuse of power, especially by officers of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The nonviolent demonstration resulted in the disbandment of SARS by the Nigerian federal government.

The nonviolent demonstration resulted in the disbandment of SARS by the Nigerian federal government.

The demonstration, however, became violent as hoodlums took advantage of the situation, burning down police stations and other buildings and attacking officers and people.
