The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that Anambra and Lagos states have the majority among the 80 suspects being interrogated by the police for their involvement in 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) malpractices.

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB Registrar, stated during a press briefing at JAMB headquarters in Abuja on Friday that new methods of exam fraud were discovered throughout the registration and examination processes.

He stated that the new approaches include identity and biometric fraud using combined thumbprints of candidates and impersonators at registration points in collusion with some CBT centres, double registration, and candidates attempting to substitute themselves.

According to the report, Anambra had the most, with 14 individuals detained for 13 incidents of impersonation and one image mismatch.

Lagos follows suit, with nine people detained for impersonation, surveillance, and mobile phone possession.

Other states with major arrests include Delta (eight suspects for impersonation), Kano (seven suspects for impersonation and mobile phone possession), and Kaduna (six suspects for impersonation and mobile phone possession).

In addition, six people were arrested in Rivers for impersonation, possession of a mobile phone, and calculators, with five suspects apiece in Ebonyi and Enugu.

Oloyede also said on Friday that a blind candidate hired a fellow blind man as an impostor to sit the 2025 UTME for him.

He claims the blind impersonator is an undergraduate.

The 2025 UTME results were officially given to the public on Friday.

Before the publication, JAMB published information on the performance of the 1.9 million applicants who took the exam.

The data show a stunning conclusion, with nearly 1.5 million individuals scoring below 200, the average standard.

The UTME, which carries a total of 400 points, tests applicants in four key disciplines. While English is required for all candidates, they may choose three additional subjects relevant to their desired course of study.
