The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has advised prepaid metre users to update their metres before November 2024.

NERC disclosed this on Tuesday through its official Twitter handle.

The announcement follows a directive by electricity companies to customers about the need to update their prepaid metres to avoid service disruption.

Emphasizing that the update is free and would not affect customers’ existing units, NERC added that users may not be able to recharge their prepaid metres without the update.

The statement on Twitter reads, If you have a prepaid meter, it may be time for an update. From November 2024 on, you may not be able to recharge your meter. However, updating is easy and free. DisCos shall commence the issuance of two free Key Change Tokens (KCTs), which will update your meter.

“The update will not affect the units in your meter, nor will it make your meter run faster than usual. Contact your DisCo for more information.”
