The House of Representatives has overwhelmingly rejected the proposed increase in electricity tariffs by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The House reached the resolution following Honourable Aliyu Madaki’s motion against the increase, especially considering the recent increase in petrol prices that Nigerians are yet to adapt to.
Hon. Madaki noted that such a tariff hike is improper and irrational at a time when citizens are still dealing with the effects of the gasoline price increase.
In response to the motion, the House has directed that its power committee, when formed, hold discussions with NERC. The goal is to reach an agreement and establish a middle ground to handle the proposed tariff hike, taking into consideration the populace’s current economic concerns.
According to the legislators, the House remains committed to protecting Nigerians’ interests and ensuring that regulatory organizations’ judgments are in line with the welfare of the public.
