A mob set ablaze a suspected motorcycle snatcher on Tuesday morning along Ibrahim Kashim Road in Makurdi, the Benue state capital city.
An eyewitness, Andrew Tergu, stated that two passengers had hired a biker known as an ‘okada rider’ to transport them to Makurdi’s Railway Quarters.
Unbeknownst to the motorcycle, a gang member had stationed himself at the location where the passengers opted to disembark.
According to the eyewitness, as soon as the two passengers alighted, the other gang member, who had been waiting for his companions, approached the motorcycle, claiming to pay the ticket, but instead pulled out scissors and stabbed him multiple times.
Tergu stated that as soon as the rider collapsed and yelled for help, the three members rushed on the motorcycle and zoomed away.
“Unfortunately, as they tried to zoom off, the last person on the motorcycle fell down, and people pounced on him and dragged him to the main road, where they set him on fire,” he said.
Eyewitnesses report that some staff members of the Benue State Sanitation Agency, in company with the policemen, were seen evacuating the remains of the suspected bike snatcher.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Benue State Command, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident and promised to get back with full details.
