The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested five people, including Alhaji Mohammed Kabara, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, in connection with an alleged multibillion-naira drug supply scam.  The commission has also detained Alhaji Abdullahi Bashir, leader of the state section of the Association for Local Governments of Nigeria and leader of the Tauroni Local Government Area. A bus transporting Pakistani pilgrims toppled in Iran, killing at least 28 people, according to Iranian official television.  According to Reuters, the collision occurred on Tuesday night in Yazd, central Iran, and was caused by a malfunctioning braking system. The province’s crisis management director informed state television that another 23 people were hurt; seven of them were critically injured. The pilgrims were travelling from the Sindh region in Pakistan to Iraq’s holy city of Karbala to commemorate one of the most important days in the Shia calendar. A small plane crashed in a West Texas neighbourhood on Tuesday, killing the pilot and a passenger and igniting a big fire on the ground that injured a lady, authorities said.  Witnesses reported the jet struggled to gain altitude after taking off from an Odessa airfield, then collided with a power line before landing in an alley around 7 a.m., according to officials. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed condolences for Olaniyi Ijalaye, the resident Electoral Commissioner for Ogun State.  Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, confirmed his death in a statement on Tuesday. Ijalaye died on Monday, August 19, 2024, shortly after attending the commission’s quarterly meeting in Abuja. The national commissioner stated that the late REC was recognised for his honesty, dedication, and hard work.
