A Nigerian group that sparked a global campaign for the safe return of schoolgirls kidnapped in 2014 said on Tuesday it would sue the government if it failed to provide answers over a similar mass abduction last month. Islamist militant group Boko Haram took 110 schoolgirls from the northeastern town of Dapchi on February 19 and, under a previous administration, it kidnapped 276 girls from the town of Chibok in 2014. “The magnitude of incompetence and carelessness of our government enabled the repeat of the worst abduction tragedy,” said campaign group Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG). The campaign group was…
Edin Dzeko’s strike ensured Roma reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2008 with victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. The former Manchester City forward latched on to Kevin Strootman’s through ball before poking the ball between Andriy Pyatov’s legs for the only goal. The Italians, who lost the first leg 2-1, went through on away goals. Ukrainians Shakhtar had Ivan Ordets sent off after he pulled Dzeko down by the shirt. Shakhtar were unlucky not to get an away goal of their own early on when Roma’s Alessandro Florenzi almost headed an in-swinging free-kick into his own net…

Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage after an awful performance ended in a 2-1 home defeat by Sevilla. Substitute Wissam Ben Yedder was the match-winner for the Spanish side, shooting from inside the area just two minutes after coming on and heading in at the back post from a corner. After posing little threat in the goalless first leg, United again looked second best against the La Liga side, though Marouane Fellaini’s thumping effort did draw Sergio Rico into a save and the away goalkeeper kept out Jesse Lingard’s low strike. Romelu Lukaku…
By Nathaniel C. Adoji Referring to an article published in ThisDay “Jonathan wasn‟t that bad afterall” credited to Akin Osuntokun where he quoted Junaid Mohammed: “We now have the least competent, the most isolated, most divisive and arrogant leader in the history of Nigeria. And in a country that is so complex and not so cohesive, this is clearly a disaster, which is where we are heading” – Junaid Mohammed It is the height of incredibility to quote persons who haven‟t earned the finesse and character for addressing issues of state and governance from an unbiased perspective. Mr Junaid Mohammed…

The top United States securities regulator on Tuesday charged foreign affiliates of three major accounting firms – KPMG, Deloitte & Touche and BDO – for conducting audits without proper oversight from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. The Securities and Exchange Commission said that the firms agreed to settle the charges by paying penalties and disgorging profits from the audits. Nigeria will begin cutting the sulphur levels allowed in imported fuels in July, a change long sought by health and environmental campaigners, a year after an initial deadline, an official at state oil company NNPC said. West African nations had promised higher quality by July 2017 as part of a United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP campaign, but only Ghana met the deadline. Nigeria imports roughly 900,000 tonnes of gasoline every month, accounting for 60 percent of West African imports of the fuel, meaning its choices on fuel quality are likely to impact the entire region. Nigeria will lower the top…
