Hours of torrential rainfall on Tuesday left Lagos paralysed, as flash floods submerged major roads and brought both commercial and social activities to a grinding halt.

Motorists and commuters were trapped in gridlock across the city, with countless vehicles breaking down on waterlogged roads.

The chaos stretched from the Island to the Mainland, choking routes in Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Dolphin Estate, Lekki, Obalende, Funsho Williams Avenue, Ikorodu Road, Agege, Ikeja, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Maryland, Oworonshoki, Oshodi, Apapa and Alimosho.

Businesses were forced to shut down or delay operations, while commuters endured hours-long delays. Many abandoned vehicles were seen blocking traffic, worsening the already dire situation.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had warned of heavy rainfall earlier in the week, projecting thunderstorms and downpours across parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday.

NiMet urged Lagos residents and other Nigerians to take safety precautions, including avoiding travel during downpours. Farmers were also cautioned against applying fertilisers or pesticides just before rainfall to prevent losses.
