The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has urged citizens to strictly adhere to the terms of their visas when travelling to the United States to avoid broad restrictions on Nigeria.

The NIS issued the advisory following concerns raised by the U.S. over the misuse of permits by some Nigerian nationals.

In a statement signed by NIS spokesperson A.S. Akinlabi, the service warned that violations of U.S. immigration or other laws could lead to permit revocation or deportation.

“Applicants are reminded that security screening by U.S. authorities continues beyond the initial entry,” the statement read.

“Breaching visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, such as removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel.”

The advisory also targeted students and tourists—two common categories of travellers.

“Nigerian students in the U.S. must remain in active study. Withdrawal, absenteeism, or changes to academic programs without proper notification may lead to visa cancellation and loss of future eligibility,” it added.

The NIS noted that U.S. consular officers will deny tourist permit applications if they suspect the primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the U.S. to secure American citizenship for the child.

The immigration service reaffirmed its commitment to working with the U.S. mission in Abuja to promote compliance with visa regulations among Nigerian travellers.
