Al Hilal held Real Madrid to a dramatic 1–1 draw in their FIFA Club World Cup Group H opener at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, with Yassine Bounou pulling off a crucial stoppage-time penalty save to deny Federico Valverde and preserve the Saudi side’s unbeaten start.

The result marks the end of Real Madrid’s perfect record against Saudi Arabian opponents (previously W2, D1) and introduces a new chapter under manager Xabi Alonso, who took charge of Los Blancos for the first time.

It was also a night of firsts for Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold, both making their Real Madrid debuts.

Al Hilal, now led by ex-Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, made their intent clear early on. Thibaut Courtois was called into action to deny Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and Marcos Leonardo squandered a fine chance from a Salem Al-Dawsari cut-back. Renan Lodi thought he had put Al Hilal in front, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Real Madrid appeared rattled and narrowly escaped when Hassan Tambakti’s header from a Ruben Neves corner missed the target.

Against the run of play, however, the Spanish giants struck first through Gonzalo Garcia, who latched onto Rodrygo’s precise cross to bundle home the opener.

Al Hilal responded before the break. Raul Asencio was penalised for bringing down Leonardo in the box, and Neves calmly converted the resulting spot-kick to level the score.

That moment marked the end of Asencio’s night, as Alonso opted to bring on Turkish prodigy Arda Guler at halftime.

Guler almost made an immediate impact, smashing a shot against the crossbar after being played through by Vinicius Junior. Moments later, Garcia was denied a second by a brilliant save from Bounou.

As the clock ticked down, it looked as though the game would end in a stalemate. But drama struck late when, after a prolonged VAR review, the referee awarded Real Madrid a penalty for a handball by Mohammed Al Qahtani.
