Argentina in danger of missing out on World Cup after 0-0 draw with Peru

Argentina are in danger of missing their first World Cup since 1970 after they were held to a goalless draw against Peru on Thursday.

Even a sell-out home crowd in Buenos Aires’ La Bombonera was not enough to rally Lionel Messi’s side, who slipped further down the South America qualifying table.

Boca Juniors striker Dario Benedetto was given his first full debut in attack alongside Papu Gomez but they were unable to break the deadlock.

Argentina showed promise and controlled possession for opening stages of both halves, although Peru held strong.

Messi came close to scoring when finding himself on the end of a corner midway through the opening period, while another effort by Gomez cleared the crossbar.

Despite increasingly desperate attempts to break through, Jorge Sampaoli’s side were unable to find a way through and must now try to secure a victory away to Ecuador in their final qualifier to guarantee at least a play-off place.

Meanwhile, a late winner by Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez helped Chile beat Ecuador 2-1 to leapfrog Argentina in the qualifying table into fifth place.

Only the top four teams in the South America group are guaranteed to be on their way to Russia next year, while the team that finish fifth will play New Zealand in a two-legged play-off in November.

A win for Argentina in Quito may yet throw them a lifeline but they will need other results to go their way if they are to secure an automatic qualifying berth.

Brazil also drew a blank as they were held 0-0 by Bolivia at high altitude in La Paz, although they top the group by 10 points and have already secured their qualification.

Colombia missed out on the opportunity to seal their place at next year’s finals after they were beaten 2-1 at home by Paraguay, who kept alive their slim hopes of making it to Russia.

Monaco striker Radamel Falcao – who has also had loan spells in the Premier League with Manchester United and Chelsea – scored the opening goal for Colombia after 70 minutes.

But goals from Oscar Cardozo a minute from time and a stoppage-time winner from Antonio Sanabria secured the points for Paraguay.

In the night’s other game, second-placed Uruguay were held 0-0 in Venezuela.
