The presidency has denied widespread reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu has sacked the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The rumours, which went viral early Monday, claimed that Yakubu had been dismissed from office and replaced by a certain Professor Bashiru Olamilekan in what was characterised as a “sweeping change” in the electoral body’s leadership.

In response to the claims, O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Advisor to the President on Digital and New Media, called the story untrue and asked the public to dismiss it.

“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Ogra wrote in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).

He stressed that any such decision or statement would come from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation or another formal communication channel.

“Any such announcement will come from the SGF’s office or any other official source,” he added.

The viral allegation, which made a sensation on multiple social media platforms, has now been denounced as false, with no official confirmation from the president or any federal agency.
