A tanker driver died in a tanker explosion on the Oko-Olowo-Jebba Expressway in Kwara State on Friday.

According to a Friday statement by Hassan Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, the tragedy occurred about 9:24 a.m.

Adekunle revealed that the tanker, which was transporting 33,000 gallons of petrol, collided with a truck carrying fertilizer, resulting in a fuel spill that sparked the fire.

He said, “The petrol tanker was carrying 33,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit, while the articulated truck was loaded with fertilizer. Upon arrival, our dedicated firefighters immediately took action to contain the fire and prevent further damage. Their swift intervention ensured that the fertilizer cargo was salvaged.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred when the articulated truck attempted to overtake the petrol tanker.

“In the process, it struck the rear of the tanker, causing a fuel spill that ignited. Tragically, the driver of the articulated truck was trapped and lost his life.”

The spokeswoman warned motorists to drive cautiously on the roadway.

“The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, urges all road users to exercise patience, adhere to safety precautions, and prioritize road safety to prevent such devastating incidents,” Adekunle concluded.

Chronicle NG reported on January 26 that there was a tragedy in Enugu State when no fewer than 18 people were burnt to death and 13 others sustained injuries in a tanker explosion at Ugwu Onyeama, along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, in the Udi Local Government Area of the state.

Around 11:30 a.m., a fuel-laden tanker collided with a water vehicle owned by JUHEL Nigeria Limited, resulting in an explosion that sparked widespread panic.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, stated that 17 vehicles were involved in the incident, including a petrol tanker, a water tanker, 15 cars, and a tricycle.
