Borussia Dortmund have suspended forward Ousmane Dembele “until further notice”, three days after the club rejected a bid from Barcelona.

The 20-year-old France international was fined and suspended until Monday for missing Thursday’s training, but the ban has been extended indefinitely.

Dortmund met with Barcelona’s representatives but the Spanish club did not meet their valuation.

The German club say that Dembele moving to Barca is “not currently likely”.

Dortmund director of football Michael Zorc said: “Our focus now is on preparation for the Bundesliga opening match in Wolfsburg [on 19 August].

“Dembele, of course, has the opportunity to complete an individual training session outside the group.”

Dortmund signed Dembele on a five-year deal from Rennes in May 2016.

Dembele made his senior debut for Stade Rennais’ reserve side in the Championnat de France Amateur, on 6 September 2014, coming on as a 78th-minute substitute for Zana Allée.

He effectively combined with fellow replacement Ambroise Gboho to set up Alseny Kourouma for the second goal of a 2–0 home win over the reserves of Breton rivals Guingamp.

He went on to make 48 appearances for Stade Rennes.

On 12 May 2016, Dembélé signed a five-year contract with German club Borussia Dortmund, effective 1 July.

On 14 August 2016, Dembélé made his debut in 2–0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup.

Dembélé scored his first goal for Die Borussen, on 20 September 2016, in a Bundesliga encounter against VfL Wolfsburg.

Dortmund won the game 5–1 at Wolfsburg’s home ground Volkswagen Arena.

On 22 November 2016, he scored his first career UEFA Champions League goal as the German club trashed Legia Warsaw 8–4 in the group-stage.

Dembélé scored his next Champions League goal against AS Monaco in the first leg of quarter-finals, on 12 April 2017, when Dortmund lost the game 2–3 at Signal Iduna Park.

On 26 April 2017, he scored the winning goal against Bayern München in the DFB-Pokal semifinal. Dortmund won the game 3–2 against their arch-rivals and advanced to the final.

On 27 May 2017, Dembélé scored the first goal of a 2–1 win as Dortmund clinched their first major title in five year by winning the 2017 DFB-Pokal final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Dembélé was subsequently named Man of the Match.

After the end of the season, Dembélé was named to the Bundesliga Team of the Season and awarded the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award.
