The Ondo State House of Assembly has vowed to go ahead with the impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of the State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, despite the lawsuit he filed to stop the move.

Aiyedatiwa has requested that the House of Assembly halt its attempted impeachment of him before the Akure High Court.

However, the parliamentarians have reassured the public that they will carry through the legislative process to a logical conclusion while closely adhering to constitutional norms, in a statement signed by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Oladiji Olamide Adesanmi.

    • Court halts impeachment proceedings against Ondo deputy governor

According to the House, “there are prima facie serious allegations of corruption and abuse of power levelled against the Deputy Governor in this case, and we will not abdicate or compromise our sacred constitutional duty to hold elected public officers accountable.”

Referring to the case of Abaribe V. Abia State House of Assembly (2022) 14 NWLR (Pt. 788) 466, the House supported its decision to move forward with the impeachment process by noting that the Court of Appeal had categorically stated that it was improper for the Appellant to rush the Court to stop his impeachment process on the grounds of an alleged breach of fair hearing when the panel to investigate and hear him had not even been constituted.
