On Thursday night, operatives of the Lagos State Police Command reportedly fired tear gas canisters at sympathizers who had gathered to pay tribute to the late musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad.

The candlelight procession to honour Mohbad, who unfortunately died, was attended by several fans, friends, and fellow musicians, but it quickly devolved into turmoil as police attempted to stop the gathering.

According to reports, many people were hurt during the encounter with law enforcement officers.

Confirming the incident, Sarah Ibrahim, a social media user, took to her verified X handle to write, “The police are currently shooting and using tear gas at attendees of Mohbad’s candlelight.”

“The Lagos State police always get scared and triggered when they see peaceful youths protesting.

“Why is the police being brutal with peaceful youths at Mohbad’s candlelight in Lekki Phase 1?

“What is the reason for this rascality?”

The rapper’s demise last Tuesday raised concerns, as many accusing fingers were pointed at the Marlian Record Label’s owner, Afeez Fashola, professionally known as Naira Marley.

In the early days after his death, there were also allegations and counter-allegations from his distant relatives regarding his estate.

Both the Nigerian police and the Lagos police command have promised to investigate his death, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the Department of State Service (DSS) to assist in the investigation.
