Arsenal defeated Manchester United in a thrilling game at Emirates Stadium by scoring twice in extra time.

Alejandro Garnacho’s goal in the 87th minute, which would have tied the score at 1, was disallowed for offside by the video assistance referee in a wild climax to a mainly rough game.

Eight more minutes later, the drama shifted to the other end as Declan Rice’s deflected shot gave Arsenal the lead before his replacement. Gabriel Jesus broke free to seal the victory and send the stadium into a frenzy.

Marcus Rashford went inside and blasted an accurate right-footed shot past Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale to give United the lead in the 27th minute after Christian Eriksen’s superb ball set him up.

The Gunners were level almost immediately when skipper Martin Odegaard was afforded too much room and struck a powerful finish into the bottom corner after the struggling Kai Havertz miskicked with the goal at his mercy and the Gunners having previously missed a wonderful opportunity.

Arsenal, who had a penalty overturned by the VAR when judge Anthony Taylor initially decided Havertz had been fouled, squandered a great late opportunity when Bukayo Saka shot straight at Andre Onana in a game that rarely reached its heights despite much effort.

With three minutes remaining, United’s celebrations were cut short as substitute Garnacho raced clear to score, but the VAR determined he was marginally offside, allowing Arsenal to deliver two crushing punches.
