The Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kano on Wednesday ordered the remand of Yusuf Haruna, an 18-year-old man, in a correctional facility for allegedly stabbing Imam Malam Sani Mohammed to death.
The defendant, who lives in Tudun Nufawa Quarters, Kano, has been charged with culpable homicide.
Mrs. Fatima Ado-Ahmad, the prosecutor, informed the court that Musa Yunusa, who lives at the same home, reported the incident to the Jakara Police Division in Kano on December 31, 2023.
She claimed that about 7 p.m., the defendant attacked and fatally stabbed the 45-year-old Imam in the back with a sharp knife.
“As a result of the attack, the victim sustained a deep injury and was rushed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.”
The defendant denied committing the offense.
However, the prosecutor stated that the offense violated Section 221 of the Penal Code.
Chief Magistrate Binta Galadanchi ordered that the defendant be remanded in a detention facility and delayed the case until January 31 for further proceedings.
In a similar event, Yusuf’s father, Haruna Sani, was charged in the Chief Magistrates’ Court with concealing his son’s involvement in the suspected murder of Imam Sani Mohammed.
The defendant, who lives in Tudun Nufawa Quarters in Kano, is on trial for violating Section 167 of the Penal Code by screening an offender.
The prosecution’s attorney, Ado-Ahmad, claimed that on December 31, 2023, the defendant hid his son, Yusuf, after stabbing Mohammed to death behind his back.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor opposed the defense counsel’s bail application.
In response, Mr. Rabiu Sidi’s defense counsel, Ahmad Rufa’i, sought the court to give the defendant bail in accordance with Sections 35 and 36 of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution as amended, as well as Section 168 of ACJL 2019 Kano.
