Three people are believed to have been killed in the armed robberies of two new-generation banks in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Wednesday evening.
According to sources, the armed robbers struck about 4.30 p.m. and destroyed the doors of the banks with explosives before fleeing with an undetermined quantity of money.
A source who saw a lifeless, blood-soaked body close to the entrance of one of the banks claimed that the thieves had also killed two people in another location in the city.
“I can confirm the killing of a man at one of the banks,” the insider stated. He took a bullet to the head. The motionless corpse remained till the cops came and everybody departed. I heard that two more people were killed at another location.”
Another eyewitness said that the robbers used a motorcycle and a black car for the operation at the two banks, while people ran for their safety.
“Even so, we learned that their explosives hit a minivan and damaged the vehicle along the road,” he added.
A community leader, who preferred anonymity, condemned the attack on the two banks and the accompanying needless killing, describing it as unfortunate, especially that the armed robbers carried out the operations for several minutes unhindered and escaped.
The community leader said that the traditional institution in the community had called the security agents, including the Area Commander, DPO, and DSS, who had assured that soldiers around the axis had been alerted.
All efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, to get his reaction were not successful.
