The Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for the annulment of the governorship election in Imo State due to alleged irregularities.
At a news conference in Owerri, the Imo state capital, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, Athan Achonu, and his PDP counterpart, Samuel Anyanwu, stated the election fell short of expectations and harmed the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has urged other political parties to unite, accept the election results, and back Governor Hope Uzodimma of the APC in developing the state over the next four years.
Macdonald Ebere, the APC state chairman, praised the election as free, fair, and credible.
A coalition of INEC observers who witnessed the election across the state’s 27 local government areas praised INEC and security personnel for their efforts.
The Imo State gubernatorial election was one of three off-cycle elections held by INEC on Saturday, with 17 political parties competing for the state’s top position.
With 540,308 votes, Uzodimma was proclaimed the winner of the exercise.
