Ulla Mueller, the United Nations Population Fund’s Country Representative in Nigeria, has called for an end to female genital mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria, calling it a violation of human rights.

Mueller told reporters in Abuja on Sunday that the behavior was common in many communities, particularly in the South-East, South-South, and South-West regions.

FGM refers to non-medical treatments that involve the partial or whole removal of the female external genitalia or other harm to the female genital organs.

According to some estimations, around 200 million girls and women worldwide have experienced some sort of female genital mutilation.

According to UNFPA, 68 million girls worldwide are at danger of mutilation between 2015 and 2030.

According to critics, the practice of FGM is based on cultural ignorance and distortion.

Mueller went on to say that such a negative habit could impede women’s ability to live their lives fully.

She said “FGM is a violation of girls and women’s human right to choices; it can affect the vision and dreams for greater future”.
