Labour union begins indefinite nationwide strike Monday

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has urged members to shut down all shipping company activities and commence an indefinite nationwide strike on Monday over a continuing disagreement with shipping businesses about low pay and employee welfare.

At a press conference on Thursday, MWUN President-General Prince Adewale Adeyanju noted that organized labour had been battling shipping firms on the minimal standard for shipping businesses on worker welfare since 2018, to no effect.

According to him, despite several ultimatums and interventions by the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo, the shipping companies, mostly multinationals, had refused to yield, expressing sadness that the working conditions of the workers in the nation’s shipping industry were nothing short of modern-day slavery.
