The Department of State Services (DSS) says Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is not in its custody.
Following Emefiele’s suspension on Friday, there were reports that he was arrested by operatives of the secret police.
In a terse statement posted on Twitter on Saturday morning, the DSS said the suspended CBN governor is not in detention.
“Currently, Emefiele is not with the DSS,” the tweet read.
Chronicle NG reports that Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on Friday.
In a statement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the suspension will allow for investigation of Emefiele who has been accused of corruption.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect,” the statement said.
“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
“Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.”
