UK Nigeria tackle illegal migration

The United Kingdom has reportedly banned Nigerians and other foreign students from bringing members of their families into the UK as of January 2024.

In a statement released today, May 23, 2023, by Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, the ban is a measure to curb the influx of immigrants into the United Kingdom.

Braverman said there has been an “unexpected rise” in the number of family members coming into the UK as dependents. This necessitated the need for a new immigration law.

The United Kingdom allows students with a valid student visa to come into the country with dependents. However, with the new law, which will be in place in January 2024, all foreign students, including Nigerians, will be barred from bringing dependents into the United Kingdom except for those on postgraduate research programmes.

Also, the implementation of the new law will seek to prevent the misuse of the visa system that sees students switching out of the student route into the work route before the completion of their studies.
