Super Eagles honour Osimhen for CAF POTY award

Napoli won their third Serie A championship, and first in 33 years, on Thursday after a 1-1 draw against Udinese handed the Naples club an insurmountable lead in the standings.

Naples victory ended the city’s lengthy wait for the Scudetto since Argentine legend Diego Maradona led them to two titles in 1986-87 and 1989-90.

With five games left in the season, Napoli won the championship thanks to a second-half goal by Victor Osimhen.

Napoli has 80 points, preserving their top spot in the standings. Lazio, who are in second place and have five games remaining, are 16 points behind Napoli.

Visiting fans carried banners with the picture of the late Maradona aloft at the packed Stadio Friuli, excitedly expecting the long-coveted Scudetto.

Sandi Lovric dampened Naples’ enthusiasm after 13 minutes when he scored with a well-placed effort that struck the top-right corner of the box.

Osimhen equalised from a rebound in the 53rd minute, sparking ecstatic celebrations among the visiting supporters.

As the final whistle blew, Naples rushed onto the pitch to join the players in celebrating the historic occasion.
